What We Need To Know
Our Planet Needs Help
90 B
Every year, we extract almost 90 billion tons of biomass, fossil energy, metal and minerals from the earth.
That is more than 11 tons for every person on the planet. And for people in the western world, that number is higher.
2.12 B
Every year, we dump a 2.12 billion tons of waste.
If all this waste was put on trucks, they would go around the world 24 times. This stunning amount of waste is partly because 99 percent of the stuff we buy is trashed within 6 months.
7 Years
This is the amount of CO2 that can still be released into the atmosphere while limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
This is our deadline, the time we have left to take decisive action to keep warming under the 1.5°C threshold.
2050
“The Earth Will Expire By 2050.”
This was the heading in an article in the British newspaper, The Guardian, in 2002. The article explains how our planet is running out of room and resources.
